Introduction

My name is Sng Wee Jie and I'm a film student currently studying in Southern Institute of Technology in Invercargill, New Zealand.

This blog is going to show the researches that I have done into hand photography and pictures of hands taken by myself which will accumulate slowly towards the end of the assignment due date.

Inspired by Danny Santos and Richard Renaldi, who both took pictures of strangers on the street gave me an idea of doing hand photography which tells it's own story just by the look of it.

Who is Danny Santos?
Danny Santos is a Singaporean photographer who does commercial works to personal works. One of his most famous work is "Portrait of Strangers".  According to Danny, he said "I often encounter faces that make me look twice; faces that stand out in the crowd without trying; faces that are out of the ordinary. They range from the exquisitely beautiful to the strangely wonderful."

Some examples of his work from "Portrait of Strangers".

Who is Richard Renaldi?
Richard Renaldi, an American photographer based in Chicago was born in Chicago in 1968. In the early 2000s, he did a few monographs from "Figure and Ground" to "Fall River Boys" but the one he was known for was "Touching Strangers". It involves two complete strangers physically interacting with each other while posing for a portrait.

Why Hands?
I have chosen to do hand photography because I believe every human hand has their own story to tell.  A privilege of photography is that it has the ability to tell a story through images. Our hands are not only unique but share more about ourselves than what we are aware of. Photographing hands can capture a person's hidden details and stories, from leftover paint stains on an artist's hand to never taking off a wedding ring.

As humans we use our hands to talk, weave stories with our hands through pencil and paper, we cry into our hands, use them to show love, and affection, to climb mountains, and to stifle laughter.

By doing so, I have decided to do about two to four photos a week until the final deadline. It will mainly consist of self experiment on hand photography to going out and grab a few strangers to give me a helping hand.
